COURSE CONDITIONS 7/16/14

It's wet. We received 2.3" of rain yesterday bringing the monthly total to 7.25" and we are only half way through the month!

7.25" may not sound like much but our average rainfall in the month of July for the last 10 years is 4.14". Last July we set records with 9.81"...it appears we are on track to exceed that (but I hope not).

That was the bad news.  The good news is your course is holding up very well in spite of the rain. Even the Bentgrass/Poa greens (mostly poa by the way) are doing great.

When we get into periods of high heat and moisture we shift into sort of a defensive position with the greens management. From mowing height and frequency, protective product applications, and fertility management, arguably, the most valuable practice is greens venting.

Basically venting is punching tiny holes all over the greens to encourage drainage and provide oxygen to the root zone.

Usually, we vent the greens once a month throughout the summer but with this much rain we are doing it every 2 to 3 weeks.

We were not "scheduled" until next week but, with the current conditions, we decided to start today.

The process is simple. Punch holes and then roll to smooth the surface. Putting conditions are rarely, if ever, affected but it makes all the difference in terms of plant health and summer survival.
