As followers of this blog (or it predecessor, the "ChipShots" newsletter), you have probably heard me opine the danger aerosol products can pose to turfgrass. Below is another example of the possible damage in a perfect set of footprints.
Discovered on #2 fairway, this set of footprints is the likely result of an aerosol insect repellent or sunscreen application. The active ingredients in these aerosol products is generally safe on turf, the damage is often a result of the propellant. Although safe on your skin, they are far less gentle on sensitive turfgrass leaves, especially on a hot summer day. As a general rule of thumb, if the can warns that the contents are flammable it is probable the contents are not safe on plant tissue.
I would certainly encourage you to continue the use of these types of products, as a matter of fact, I use them on nearly a daily basis, but please consider standing on the asphalt cart path or other "non-living" surface when you make your application.
On a positive note, the damage shown below was only temporary. It appears the plant was not killed but only had a bit of tip burn. The unsightly discoloration was merely aesthetic and the damaged leaf tips grew out and were mowed off in a couple of weeks.
