RANGE TEE RENOVATION

The range tees have received a bit of a face lift.  As many of you likely remember, the range tee was a mix of cool season turf including bentgrass and reygrass until is was sprigged with Latitude 36 bermudagrass a few years ago. The Lat. 36 has performed very well as it has a very aggressive rate of growth in the summer months and divot heal much more quickly than before. But some of the cool season turf has been hanging on and it was decided to "finish" the conversion to a mono-stand of Lat. 36.

The renovation actually started late last winter. While the bermudagrass was still dormant, the tee was sprayed with Roundup to kill any remaining cool season turf (without harming the bermudagrass). And now these areas, primarily around the edges, where the Latitude 36 bermudagrass has been slow to fill has been sodded.  About 8,000 square feet of sod was installed yesterday.

Bermudagrass, when the temperatures are warm, is a very aggressive grower and will root down and fill in very quickly.  Usually it can be ready for play in just a few weeks so let's hope this cool wet weather pattern changes soon and the warm weather moves back in.

Some of the tall fescue range tee surrounds are slated for repairs as well.  Unfortunately the sod farms were too wet to harvest this week so we are hoping to be able to get sod finish up the work on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Additionally, the contractor had a few extra "big rolls" of sod. So, instead of wasting the material, they installed it on a few of our smaller tees that were already warm season turf (zoysia) but were in need of a face lift.  We were actually able to slightly increase the size of these tees as well. The tees with the "surprise" sod job are #10 senior tee, #11 forward tee, and #18 senior tee.  As you might expect these tees will be closed for a few weeks until the sod can root down and the tee markers that are normally in these areas will be played from temporary locations on other tees or, in the case of #11 forward tee, from the beginning of the fairway.
