GREEN LASER - JUST ONE OF THE METHODS EMPLOYED TO "ENCOURAGE" GEESE TO LEAVE YOUR GOLF COURSE

Chantilly National seems to be a very appealing destination for the local population of Canada geese. We are not alone, most golf courses deal with the mess the geese leave to varying degrees. Over the last few decades a portion of the geese population has shifted their migration patterns from migratory to resident, meaning they no longer fly south for the winter but opt to stay here year around. Typically, golf courses are a safe haven for many animals and, generally, it is encouraged if not at least tolerated. But, as most golfers have witnessed, geese are not the most hygienic of animals and their presence is generally not welcomed - so we try to discourage them from making Chantilly their home.

There are several methods we employ at Chantilly to discourage and harass the geese. The most effective we have found is a high powered green laser. It is pretty simple, just point it in their direction and they fly away. It is less effective during the brighter daylight hours but in the low light conditions present at dawn and dusk or on overcast days like today - it has no equal.

On the up side, it is totally harmless to the birds and is not disruptive to golfers or the homeowners that neighbor the golf course. On the down side, they do come back, so we just make it a part of our daily routine to run them off. Hopefully, eventually they will take your golf course off the list of preferred places to land.

The cell phone video below is not of the highest quality but I thought some of you might find it interesting.
