NEW DIVOT SAND

The green divot sand that you find in the divot bottles on the golf carts will be a little different this year. The green sand we have been using for the past several years is a straight dyed sand. It does work but it does not stay in the divot very well. The problem seems to be how quickly the sand dries (or how poorly it holds water). Wind, heavy rain, and the fairway and tee mowers often remove the sand from the desired location.

The new product we will use this year is a 60/40 blend of the same dyed green sand and organic composted mushroom soil. The compost is simply soil that was used as a growing medium for mushroom production. After the mushrooms are harvested, the soil, and any leftover mushrooms or mushroom parts, are composted and dried.

The idea is that the compost will retain moisture in the divot repair mix and make it a little "stickier" helping to hold it in place. The end result should yield faster divot recovery.

In the image below, the "old sand" is on the top.  Again, it is just straight sand and green dye.  On the bottom is the "new sand" blended 60/40 green dyed sand and compost. Surprisingly the dye is the same in both products but the blended product appears darker due to the compost.

Also, please keep in mind, this is simply a change in the divot repair product...not a change in how it is used.  As before, we encourage you to "Replace the Divot First".  After taking a divot, please replace the chunk of turf but, if for some reason, it is unusable then fill and level with the sand. Thanks!

As a reminder, our next Divot Night is May 10 at 6pm. I hope you will plan to join us.
