*DELAYED DUE TO RAIN - WORK HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK (5/10-5/12).
Next week, if the weather cooperates, the range tees will get some much needed attention. As many of you likely remember, the range tees were converted from a cool season blend of ryegrass and bentgrass to Lattitide 36 bermudagrass several years ago. The bermudagrass was planted as sprigs into the actively growing cool season turf. Much of the tee is now bermudagrass but some of the cool season turf is still surviving, especially along the back edge and the shaded areas near the tree line. Rather than sprig these areas again, the trouble areas will be sodded.
The first steps of this renovation project were actually started late last winter. Back in March, while the bermudagrass was still dormant, the range tees were sprayed with roundup to selectively remove the bentgrass and ryegrass without injury the desired bermudagrass. As of today, most of the cool season turf is dead. Next week, a contractor will be onsite to strip the dead sod and replace it with Lat. 36.
The tee will be closed while the workers are there but once they have completed the repairs the range tee will be re-opened on the mats only until the new sod can root down. Over the next few weeks, the new sod will root down and the grass tee can be opened for the season. Lattidue 36 bermudagrass loves warm weather and it's growth is highly dependent on heat and sun so let's hope for some warm days.
The next 2 images show areas where the cool season turf has been killed and the bermudagrass is thin or nonexistent. These are the areas that will be sodded next week.
The image below shows an area that will not require sod. The small brown areas are dead cool season turf and the green is healthy bermudagrass. Now that the cool season turf has been eliminated the bermudagrass will quickly fill these areas in.
