The big news for today is that your golf course will open for play today at 11:00am. If my records are accurate, the last time the course was open was over a month ago on Saturday, February 14. Let's hope spring is here to stay and snow will not force another golf course closure any time soon. If you have seen the extended forecast, you know that there is a chance of rain/snow later this week. It is still several days away and the forecast will likely change several times before Friday...I am keeping my fingers crossed.
On to the course update - it will come as no surprise to most of you that the golf course is wet. Between the melting snow, thawing ground, and an inch of rain last week, your golf course is a bit soggy. Fortunately, it seems to be draining fairly well. There is no longer any standing water on the greens or tees. They are a little on the soft side but they are playable. Fairways and roughs have the normal areas of standing water but the sun and wind yesterday helped to dry them up a bit.
Speaking of the wind, it was very windy out here yesterday. In the image below you can see a pine tree that fell yesterday on #5. I guess the soft ground and wind was just too much for it.
Your GCM staff is diligently working to get the golf course whipped back into shape. Today we are changing cups and raking bunkers, something we have not done in months it seems. Tomorrow the plan is to get busy removing the tree on #5 and other branches and debris that have accumulated over the last few weeks when we could not get on the course. If all goes well, we hope to get a mow or roll on the greens this week also. Additionally, the bunkers need a fresh edge, there are a couple of small drainage projects in the queue, and the landscape beds need a fresh edge and mulch.
I don't know if spring is here to stay or this is just a tease, but there is plenty of work to be done so we will take advantage of the warmer temperatures (and rain free days) while they last and move forward with preparing your golf course for the quickly approaching golf season.
