COURSE CONDITIONS - 2/19/16

Your golf course is very wet but still frozen solid...for the moment.  The good news is that most of the snow has melted and we are anticipating opening the golf course on Saturday (3 or 4 temporary greens are likely due to some lingering snow/ice).

The challenge (and risk) at this point is trying to guess when the course will begin to thaw. Currently, although very wet, the golf course, specifically the greens, are frozen solid and firm.  There is very little risk to the plant health from playing golf on frozen greens.  The problems come as the surface begins to thaw on the top inch or two and the ground below is still frozen.

When the surface thaws and become unstable there is a significant chance that the roots that are still in frozen ground will shear or break off. As you can imagine this can be very damaging to a putting green.

An exact timeline of when the golf course will thaw to the point that the potential for damage is unknown but what we do know is that once the surface thaws the conditions will require the golf course to be closed until the ground refreezes or completely thaws and drains.

I hate the thought that after being closed for so long we would have to close the course after only opening for one day but with temperatures forecasted to reach the 60s tomorrow that is a real possibility.

As always, the course conditions will be evaluated daily and any updates will be posted to this blog in the "quick update" section and to the information line at 703-631-9560 ext. 815.
